Winter driving is hard on commercial trucks. A little preparation in the fall pays off in fewer breakdowns and safer miles all season long. Here’s the V-Max winter prep checklist.
Cooling System and Antifreeze
Have your coolant tested and topped off. Mixed or degraded antifreeze can freeze and crack components even in moderate cold. This is also a good time to inspect hoses and clamps.
Batteries and Charging System
Cold weather is brutal on batteries. Load-test your batteries and inspect cables for corrosion before winter sets in. A failing battery in summer becomes a no-start in January.
Tires, Air System, and Brakes
Check tire tread depth and pressure regularly — cold air drops pressure quickly. Drain air tanks daily to prevent moisture from freezing in the lines, and inspect brake chambers and slack adjusters.
Cab Comfort and Safety
Don’t forget the basics: a working heater, clear wipers, fresh washer fluid, and an emergency kit with blankets, food, and a flashlight.
